about

This was a song that Drew brought to the band. We knew we wanted it on the album, we all loved the feel and riff and chord changes but it lacked a cohesive lyric and melody. So I took it home and some ideas popped into my head. I added a pre-chorus and new vocal melody and put words to it.

Thematically the story of Where Did She Go is one I’ve used a few times in my songwriting. It’s a common theme in the music I like from the late sixties too; the misunderstood youth escaping from overbearing parents or a bad situation. In this case it’s an arranged marriage and the titular girl runs away from an oppressive situation with her girlfriend to go somewhere their love is accepted and understood. And in the bridge of the song the parents realise they were jerks and feel bad about it. Do I have some baggage? Very likely, but an uplifting theme of freedom to be who you want to be is an attractive and addictive dream to have. - Jamie

lyrics

She said I don’t want to go
He said father told you so, and so we must go
She said I want to be late
He said father said don’t wait, and so we must go
But when the time came she was nowhere to be found

Where did she go?
What did she say?
She ran away
When did she smile?
She’d not smiled for a while
Did she know?

Wednesday evening after school
She met her girlfriend by the pool, and they ran away
She said “I’d rather be dead,
Than let them force me to be wed, and so we must go.”
And when the day came, she was far away and so in love

Where did she go?
What did she say?
She ran away
When did she smile?
She’d not smiled for a while.
Did she know?

Where did we go wrong?
We pushed her for so long
Now our darling daughter’s gone and run away

Where did she go?
What did she say?
She ran away
When did she smile?
She’d not done that for a little while
Did she know?
Where did she go?
What did she say?
She ran away
When did she smile?
She’d not smiled for a while.
Did she know?
